Vascular Testing

Vascular Ultrasound

This test uses ultrasound to evaluate blood flow in the arteries and veins of the body. Vascular testing is performed in our office by Registered Vascular Technologists using state-of-the-art high-frequency ultrasound equipment. One of the most informative, radiation-free tools for assessing vascular health.

What vascular ultrasound shows

Vascular ultrasound uses sound waves to visualize blood vessels and measure how blood is moving through them.

Narrowing, blockages, aneurysms, and blood clots can develop quietly and often produce no symptoms until a serious event. Vascular ultrasound allows your physician to identify these conditions early, when they are most treatable, and to track changes over time.

Carotid

Upper extremity artery

Abdominal aorta

Lower extremity artery

Renal artery

Lower extremity vein (LENI)

Studies we perform on site

Six distinct vascular studies, available by physician order..

Carotid arteries

Evaluates blood flow to the brain through the carotid arteries. Narrowing raises stroke risk. Used in cardiovascular risk assessment and for patients with a history of transient ischemic attack.

Upper extremity arteries

Checks for narrowing or blockage in the arteries supplying the arms. Useful when evaluating arm pain, numbness, or asymmetric blood pressure readings.

Abdominal aorta

Screens for aneurysm, narrowing, or plaque buildup in the body's largest artery. Your physician will advise whether screening is appropriate for you.

Lower extremity arteries

Evaluates narrowing in the arteries supplying the legs. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) often presents as leg pain during walking that resolves with rest.

Renal (kidney) arteries

Checks for narrowing in the arteries supplying the kidneys. Often performed when blood pressure is difficult to control despite medication.

Lower extremity veins (LENIs)

Evaluates for blood clots in the deep veins of the legs (DVT) and for vein weakness or valve reflux that can cause chronic swelling.

What to expect

Duration

Most vascular ultrasound studies take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the vessels being examined.

Preparation

Some abdominal studies require fasting beforehand. Your care team will let you know what preparation is needed for your specific study.

During the test

Our Registered Vascular Technologist applies ultrasound gel to the skin and moves a transducer across the area being examined. The procedure is painless and radiation-free.

After the test

Results are interpreted by your Lown Group physician and discussed with you in the context of your overall cardiovascular care.

All testing, labs, and clinical services are billed to insurance and not included in the membership fee.
