Pacemaker and Defibrillator (ICD) Evaluations
Many of our patients have implanted pacemakers, defibrillators, or automatic internal cardiac defibrillators (ICDs). Our Lown cardiologists provide evaluations and monitoring for these devices, including telephonic surveillance. Multiple clinical trials support the use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) for the prevention of sudden cardiac death in patients with heart failure. Available exclusively to Lown Group members.

What device evaluation includes
Implanted cardiac devices save lives, and they need regular review to make sure they are working as intended.
At The Lown Group, we evaluate pacemakers and defibrillators to confirm that leads are intact, battery life is sufficient, and device settings are optimized for your clinical needs. For patients receiving active therapy from the device, including defibrillator shocks or anti-tachycardia pacing, device evaluation also provides a detailed record of events that informs your overall cardiovascular care.
Modes of evaluation
In-office interrogation
Direct communication with your device during an office visit. Our team reviews lead integrity, battery status, settings, and any recorded cardiac events.
Telephonic surveillance
Remote monitoring that transmits device data to our team between office visits. For many patients, this reduces the need for frequent in-person checks and provides earlier detection of changes.
Clinical correlation
Your Lown Group cardiologist reviews device data in the context of your overall cardiovascular health, medication regimen, and recent clinical events.
Coordination with implanting electrophysiologist
When adjustments are needed, your care team coordinates directly with your implanting electrophysiologist to ensure continuity.
What to expect
Frequency
Evaluation schedules vary based on device type and clinical status. Your cardiologist will recommend a schedule tailored to you.
In-office visits
Typically short, non-invasive, and painless. A handheld reader is placed over the device to retrieve data.
Remote transmissions
Your transmitter sends data automatically on a scheduled basis, with your care team notified of any findings that require attention.
Results
Your Lown Group cardiologist reviews the data and discusses any findings with you in the context of your overall care plan.
All testing, labs, and clinical services are billed to insurance and not included in the membership fee.
