Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

This non-invasive test measures how many calories your body burns in the resting state. When you are active, you will burn more calories than the BMR. A precise clinical starting point for metabolic health planning, nutrition recommendations, and personalized exercise prescription.

What BMR measures

Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body burns at rest, simply to maintain essential functions like breathing, circulation, and body temperature.

Most calorie calculators estimate BMR from population averages. A direct measurement captures the number that is actually yours. Two patients of the same height, weight, and age can have meaningfully different BMRs, and knowing the real number informs clinical decisions about nutrition, weight, and metabolic health that general estimates cannot.

What BMR informs

Metabolic health planning

For patients being evaluated for metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, or thyroid-related concerns, BMR provides data that complements other clinical findings.

Weight and nutrition planning

Knowing your true resting burn makes nutrition planning precise rather than based on estimates, whether the goal is weight loss, weight maintenance, or performance.

Exercise prescription

Combined with CPET, strength assessment, and body composition analysis, BMR helps our exercise physiology team design programs calibrated to your biology.

Tracking change over time

BMR shifts as muscle mass, activity, and health status change. Periodic measurement helps your care team detect metabolic trends early.

What to expect

Duration

BMR tests are booked for 30 minutes.

Preparation

You will be asked to fast for several hours before the test, avoid caffeine, and refrain from exercise that morning. Your care team will share specific preparation instructions when you schedule.

During the test

You will rest comfortably in a reclined position while breathing through a mouthpiece that measures the oxygen you consume and carbon dioxide you exhale. The test is non-invasive and painless.

After the test

Your ordering Lown Group provider will review the results with you and integrate them into your overall care plan.

All testing, labs, and clinical services are billed to insurance and not included in the membership fee.
