Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is a non-invasive test that measures your blood pressure over a 24-hour period while you go about your normal day and sleep at night. It is worn on the upper arm, similar to the cuffs we use in our office, but a bit smaller, and it automatically inflates and deflates throughout the monitoring period. One of the most accurate ways to diagnose hypertension and evaluate how well treatment is working outside the clinic setting.

Why ambulatory monitoring matters
A single blood pressure reading in a clinic is a snapshot. Ambulatory monitoring captures the full picture.
Blood pressure changes throughout the day in response to activity, stress, sleep, and medication timing. A reading taken in the office can miss sustained hypertension that only shows up at home or during specific hours, and it can also overstate blood pressure in patients whose readings rise at the clinic (white-coat hypertension). Ambulatory monitoring records your blood pressure every 15 to 30 minutes across a full 24-hour cycle, giving your cardiologist the information needed to diagnose accurately and dose medication precisely.
What ambulatory monitoring informs
Accurate diagnosis of hypertension
Confirms whether elevated office readings reflect true sustained hypertension, white-coat hypertension, or masked hypertension that only appears outside the clinic.
Nocturnal blood pressure patterns
Captures how your blood pressure behaves during sleep. The absence of an expected nighttime dip is an independent cardiovascular risk marker that routine readings cannot detect.
Treatment effectiveness
Shows whether your current medications are controlling blood pressure consistently across the full 24-hour cycle, informing dose and timing adjustments.
Symptom correlation
Helps evaluate episodes of dizziness, fatigue, or lightheadedness by correlating symptoms with real-time blood pressure readings.
What to expect
Duration
You wear the monitor for 24 hours. The initial fitting appointment at our office takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Preparation
No fasting or special preparation is required. Wear a loose-fitting short-sleeve shirt to your fitting appointment so the cuff can be placed comfortably on your upper arm.
During the test
A small, lightweight monitor is attached to a belt or shoulder strap and connected to a blood pressure cuff on your upper arm. The device inflates automatically every 15 to 30 minutes during the day and every 30 to 60 minutes at night. You continue your normal daily activities and sleep.
After the test
You return the device to our office the next day. Your Lown Group cardiologist reviews the full 24-hour recording and discusses the findings with you in the context of your overall cardiovascular care.
All testing, labs, and clinical services are billed to insurance and not included in the membership fee.
