Cardiac Testing for Athletes
Sudden death is the #1 cause of death in endurance athletes, such as long distance runners, cyclists, triathletes, and rowers. Up to 90% of these sudden deaths are related to pre-existing, undiagnosed cardiac abnormalities. While a patient’s history and physical examination may detect some cardiac abnormalities, the inclusion of an electrocardiogram – abbreviated as EKG or ECG – will increase the effectiveness of screening to over 90%.
While many organizations do not require athletes to be tested before competition, we advise any athlete with cardiac symptoms to be examined by our team of board certified cardiologists and exercise physiologists using our state of the art exercise equipment. Before your competition season begins, please check your requirements for your sport and schedule an appointment with our Sports Cardiology team at 617-732-1318.
