At the Lown Cardiovascular Group, we encourage our patients to stay informed about their health and to be empowered to make the best possible medical decisions for themselves. Harvard Medical School publishes a series called Healthbeat that sends information relevant to your health concerns right to your email inbox (subscribe here). They recently put out an article addressing common misconceptions about seeking end-of-life care and the importance of advance planning for the future while you are healthy.
This article reviews some central themes of the Lown Cardiovascular Group's initiative, The Good Life Project (headed by Drs. Dara Lee Lewis and Charles Blatt, and NP Kristian Bakken). TGLP was created with the intention of fostering open communication between patient, family and provider to improve the care of patients living with serious illness. Healthbeat provides a general overview of several complex concerns, including a patient's right to treatment refusal and preserving a patient's quality of life until the end.
